Charles S. D. Fessenden, 1828-1896, was surgeon in charge at the U.S. Marine Hospital, Portland, Me. Born in Portland, he graduated from Bowdoin College and Brunswick Medical School. His brother was William Pitt Fessenden, 1806-1869, a senator from Maine and Secretary of the Treasury. Charles joined the Marine Hospital Service in 1861, eventually serving in Maine, New York, Louisiana, and Alabama.
